While adenoids help protect the body from viruses and bacteria, they can become swollen and enlarged or infected over time. This could be caused by infections, allergies, or other factors. Some children are born with adenoids that are abnormally large. When a child's adenoids swell, they can partially block his or her airway, causing problems.
